HTA Landscape Design has been involved with the Town Centre Gardens since 2006 when we prepared a vision for the 4 hectare park, which subsequently developed into a successful Heritage Lottery Fund Parks for People Stage 1 grant application. The funding prospectus which was developed alongside this received a Landscape Institute Award in 2007.
After implementing the first phase (GAF funded, £420,000) of enhancements on site, we were then appointed through competitive tender to deliver the Stage 2 HLF application. HTA have subsequently acted as Lead Consultant, Landscape Architect, Contract Administrator, Architect and Project Manager through the duration of the project which is due to complete on site in June this year.
The Town Centre Gardens is the first New Town Park refurbishment funded by the Heritage Lottery. Refurbishment works include: renovation of the lake and fountains; a new bridge; memorial gardens; sensory gardens; a 1500sqm play area; 1.5km of new paths; the removal of over 100 trees; ecological enhancements including the planting of over 50,000 bulbs and 1500sqm of wildflowers; functional and effect lighting; new toilet blocks and community officer’s facilities; wayfinding and information signage; branding; and full restoration of extensive features throughout the park.
I think I can safely speak for my colleagues when I say that we have been extremely impressed with HTA’s approach to this project, from their hand-on involvement and commitment to public engagement, to their creative yet extremely professional attention to detail, and their capability in managing the implementation against the odds, both on time and on budget. Their research into the heritage of the Gardens was very impressive, and brought to light information that even our own museum was unaware of, and their design work was sensitive and respectful to the original features.
