Grey Coat Hospital School St Andrews site, established in 1701 is one of the oldest schools in Westminster. HTA developed the design through building consensus with the school to enhance the image, retain the traditional and historic nature of the school grounds. The project also integrates a new refectory building and provide an environment fit for pupils of the 21st century.
HTA have created a ‘vision’ for the school grounds to maximise learning opportunities for pupils and create a beautiful environment that the school will take pride in. As a confined, urban inner city site 200m from the Houses of Parliament, the multi functional use of the outside space is even more important. All available space has been designed to provide; organised formal and informal curriculum activities; legible uses of and specific functions; a formal garden for entertaining and formal gatherings; wild gardens and habitat areas.
Socialising is accommodated in clustered sheltered seating which doubles as outside classrooms. A principle of the design is to open and protect views from the surrounding historic environment and provide a new inspiring multiuse art room on the roof of the new modern teaching, refectory and technology block.
