Enfield Council Small Sites Programme wins category Excellence to Deliver Housing (Small Sites)
HTA Design worked with Peter Barber Architects for Enfield Council, to deliver Phase 2 of the Council’s Small Sites Programme. Neilcott Construction were appointed to build out the first of four sites making up this phase of development. The Enfield Small Sites Programme pioneers how small brownfield sites can deliver a significant number of homes through innovative design and collaborative planning. Due to the constrained nature of these sites, the design approach has been key to overcome some of the issues small sites face with regards to preserving neighbouring amenity to creatively address overlooking concerns. The planning involvement from both the public and private sectors has been key to the unlocking the development potential of these small sites, along with an ambitious client and a skillful architect. The programme maximises the amount of housing available on underutilised brownfield land.
“We are truly delighted with the Small Sites Award. We spend a lot of our time advising local authorities and others on small sites. These are a hugely untapped resource but fraught with difficulty. We are very much encouraged by the Government’s emerging support for the role of small sites and look forward to continue our work in this area”
Dr Riette Oosthuizen, Planning Partner, HTA Design LLP
The judges had this to say about Enfiled Council Small Sites:
“We were impressed with the council’s proactive approach to delivering affordable housing on previously developed, difficult to develop land in their authority. The planners were central to this project from using planning policy to identify the sites for development through to understanding the kind of housing the community wanted to resolving some of the design issues. As a result, the project has strong local support.”
