Planning Permission of the Year and Award for Affordable Housing
We are thrilled to announce that our planning team attended the Planning Awards yesterday evening and it was a night full of success! Our team were winners of not just one but two awards, securing the coveted Planning Permission of the Year for 101 George Street as well as overall category winner award for award for Affordable Housing: Red Brick Estate.
The Planning Awards are run by Planning magazine in conjunction with PlanningResource and PlacemakingResource. The Awards recognise excellence in both planning and place-making.
Planning Permission of the Year – 101 George Street, Croydon

This award goes to the project which the judges to consider to be most likely to have the most significant positive impact on the physical or environmental quality of a place. This scheme in the heart of Croydon town centre is a unique opportunity as it will create 546 new homes for rent on a site that has been vacant for 20 years. The scheme was a collaboration between the London Borough of Croydon, Greystar, Tide Construction and HTA Design LLP to deliver a 44 storey building.
The redevelopment of 101 George Street will be the tallest modular building in the world. The development is innovative with its use of off-site modular construction techniques, allowing the 44 storey building to be constructed within 2 ½ years of start on site.
Award for Affordable Housing – Red Brick Estate, designed by Levitt Bernstein
This award is awarded to the team or project that can most clearly demonstrate how its professional planning work has helped to, or is likely to help to, increase provision of good quality housing at below market cost.
This scheme by Islington Council’s New Build team, designed by Levitt Bernstein, delivers 55 new homes, including 39 affordable homes, and a new community centre enabled by demolition of the existing disused and underused non-residential spaces. These spaces are re-provided both on-site as part of redevelopment, with a planning case also made for relocation of the youth centre in a modern and enhanced facility to a nearby Council owned property. In addition to delivering additional affordable housing in an already densely developed area the scheme delivers landscape and environmental improvements for the benefit of both new and existing residents. The major landscape improvements successfully tie together old and new.
The Merton Regeneration Project was also highly commended in the Planning Permission of the Year Award submitted by Clarion Housing.
