Bunhill Court is a model of high quality city living which provides much needed family and affordable accommodation in the heart of London. All homes are light and spacious, exceeding the Mayor’s unit area standards, they are dual aspect, and have great views. The scheme meets high environmental standards (all homes are designed to Code level 4) and is car free. The scheme is very accessible - more than 10% of the accommodation can be occupied by wheelchair users and the whole scheme complies with Lifetime Homes standards.
Our design for Bunhill Court completes the street frontage on Bunhill Row and Featherstone Street with a new building which is in keeping with the scale and character of its context. Stepping built form of five to seven stories forms the perimeter block, with one to three storey houses within the courtyard. The pallet of materials, brick and render with reconstituted stone cills and copings will generate a sense of calm and historical continuity.
On the south and west garden facing elevations, we have pursued a much more informal approach, responding to the tradition of rear elevations in which successive adaptations create visual diversity over the years. We have enhanced this with a framework of balcony railings and supports that is also designed to sustain climbing plant species that will be selected to enhance the biodiversity of the scheme, and make vertical ecological links to green roofscapes. The six town houses, in three semi detached pairs, echo this treatment, with framed Trafalgar balconies around upper windows set back from the perimeter wall by ground level patios, and overlooking Bunhill Fields.
Bunhill Court will be a great place to live - spacious apartments with great views, communal spaces designed to stimulate social interaction and with very high levels of amenity.
