Rustat Road, Cambridge

A key site close to the railway station in Cambridge, the former Leica Site has been developed by Laing Homes North Thames. HTA have designed angled blocks with views through to a generous open space on the south of the site.

A total of 128 1 and 2 bed flats for sale with undercroft parking are provided. The overall development has an affordable housing provision at the northern end of the site.

The balconies were designed to give everyone a large outdoor space, and they are staggered so that each flat has a double-height space and plenty of natural light in the flat.

Landscape has been an important part of the design, integrating soft and hard finishes, bin and bicycle stores into the block ends, and car parking. The blocks step down from 6 storeys by the railway to 3 on Rustat Road.

Timber frame construction with brick and weatherboard cladding, and slatted timber balcony screens make a distinctive group of buildings.

HTA obtained planning permission for the flats in February 2005, and then carried out the detail design and production information for Laing Homes.
