HTA’s Una Marson Library Featured in Building Southwark

17 Jul 2025

HTA’s Una Marson Library, part of the Aylesbury regeneration, has been featured in Building Southwark: Architecture and Regeneration in a London Borough by Kenneth Powell.

Powell’s book charts Southwark’s remarkable transformation since the 1980s, showcasing over 50 landmark projects that have reshaped the borough. Alongside cultural icons such as Tate Modern, the Shard, and London Bridge Station.

Located within the renewal of the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth, the Una Marson Library is named after the pioneering Jamaican writer, feminist, activist and broadcaster. Una Marson was the first black woman to be employed by the BBC and went on to be the producer of ‘Caribbean Voices’, a radio show that became an essential forum for Caribbean literary voices.

The library provides a vibrant and flexible community hub with meeting rooms and dedicated children’s spaces. A striking timber-ribbed ceiling creates an inspiring and welcoming environment for residents.

This recognition highlights HTA’s continued commitment to delivering architecture that blends social value, contextual design, and community impact.
