Making nature part of wharf life…

In a pioneering partnership with the Eden Project, Eden Dock at Canary Wharf Group is reimagined into a one-of-a-kind, waterfront oasis, focused on connecting people with water and nature.

Eden Dock is at the centre of Canary Wharf’s evolution. HTA worked in close collaboration with CWG, Howells and the wider design team, to deliver a ground-breaking new public realm with interconnected pontoons and floating ecology islands within the Grade I listed, 19th-century dock, which had been previously inaccessible and inanimate. Today, Eden Dock welcomes visitors right to the water’s edge across generous amphitheatre steps and planted pontoons which connect as outdoor rooms. These lead visitors to an open water swimming course, located within a spectacular setting that’s bringing nature back to the city.

The design introduces innovative floating islands, linked by pontoons and boardwalks. Planted with native species including perennials, shrubs, and trees, these islands provide valuable habitats for invertebrates, amphibians, fish, and waterfowl. Buoyant yet porous, the islands allow plant roots to draw nutrients from the dock water, supporting sustainable growth.

While inaccessible to people, the planted islands are highly accessible to wildlife. Ramps allow chicks and ducklings to find refuge, fish refuges beneath the islands offer safe spawning grounds, and bird boxes hung in trees create nesting sites for garden bird species.

HTA has been instrumental in this transformation, working closely with CWG to develop a green vision for the neighbourhood. This vision includes multiple projects designed to bring a consistent, biodiverse, and people-centred approach to the public realm, connecting Canary Wharf, Wood Wharf, and surrounding areas. A key component of this vision is a new ‘green spine’ running across Canary Wharf, reinforcing a nature recovery network across this part of London and creating 6 hectares of new and improved green space.

James Lord, Partner and Landscape Lead at HTA Design said: “HTA Design is delighted to be part of the design team delivering a new green vision for Canary Wharf. With biodiversity, leisure and community at its heart, Eden Dock is designed to be accessed and enjoyed by all. Welcoming visitors right to the water’s edge, and providing a lush urban habitat for wildlife, it is the first milestone in Canary Wharf’s ambitious plan to reconnect people with nature in the city.”
