Recruitment: Senior Technical Leader

28 Jan 2026

HTA Design is an award winning interdisciplinary design partnership of specialist teams working collaboratively in Architecture, Landscape Design, Urban Design, Interior Design, Sustainability, Planning and Communication Design.

We’re seeking a Senior Technical Leader to provide dedicated, specialist technical expertise across a range of UK projects, with a particular emphasis on Building Regulations and Fire Safety. You will embed technical excellence and compliance at every RIBA stage, shape our standards, knowledge and quality systems, mentor and upskill our teams, and support Project Leaders to ensure our designs are practical, buildable and compliant; that our buildings are sustainably designed, safe and healthy; and that commercial risk is minimised. You will also help develop HTA’s external profile through engagement with clients, industry groups and thought leadership.

What you will do:

  • Work with Project Leaders to set early technical strategies and drive them through all RIBA stages, reviewing detailing and NBS specifications, testing and commissioning, mock‑ups and site benchmarks, undertaking inspections, responding to RFIs and submittals, resolving non‑conformances and escalating material risks.
  • Maintain HTA’s technical centre of excellence, setting and auditing standards, guidance, details and quality processes, and embedding buildability, product suitability and whole‑life performance through structured RIBA stage reviews that track actions, risks and lessons learned.
  • Lead the practice response to the Building Safety Act 2022 and associated secondary legislation.
  • Provide compliance advice across Building Regulations and Approved Documents, British Standards and Codes of Practice.
  • Champion ISO 19650‑aligned BIM and information management, ensuring robust model management, coordination/clash detection, documentation, and asset data, and implementing Revit/CDE QA.
  • Grow capability across the practice through CPD, mentoring and continuous improvement, reporting on technical risk, compliance and lessons learned.
  • Help win work and build HTA’s external profile by contributing to bids and interviews, presenting to clients and stakeholders, engaging with panels, publications and industry groups, maintaining strong relationships with BSR/building control and warranty providers, and fostering inclusive, cross‑disciplinary collaboration while planning resources and managing time, priorities and budgets.

The successful candidate will have/be:

  • ARB registered Architect or MCIAT Chartered Architectural Technologist with 10+ years’ post-qualification experience in technical design, detailing, specification and construction-stage support through to handover.
  • Significant UK residential-led/mixed-use experience across RIBA 3–6, including design & build and contractor collaboration; proven in leading technical delivery across multiple projects/teams.
  • Experience of the Building Safety Act regime (including HRBs, Gateways and change control)
  • Experience establishing technical standards, QA systems, knowledge management and delivering internal CPD/training.
  • Understanding of UK Building Regulations, Approved Documents (including Regulation 7 materials restrictions).
  • Ability to act as, or advise, the Principal Designer under CDM 2015 and/or the Principal Designer (Building Regulations), with competence aligned to BS 8670/PAS 8671.
  • Strong construction detailing and due diligence: buildability, sequencing, tolerances, QA, testing/commissioning; authoring NBS specifications and product selection.
  • Familiar with warranty provider requirements (NHBC, LABC, Premier Guarantee).
  • Envelope/physics literate (thermal/moisture analysis, airtightness, overheating risk, acoustic separation, fire-stopping/cavity barriers, façade compliance).
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills; able to deliver clear accurate reports and presentations; able to chair reviews, mentor, and coach others.
