One Place, Many Stories

Architecture

The renewal of Roehampton’s Alton Estate is shaped by a strong architectural response that builds on the area’s distinctive mid-century character and landscape setting. The proposals introduce new residential buildings, civic architecture, and generous green public spaces that reinforce the estate’s identity while supporting everyday activity, social interaction, and a clear neighbourhood structure. Centred on Danebury Avenue, the masterplan creates a legible and connected urban framework, with a new community square, village green, and an enhanced pedestrian network linking homes, amenities, and key destinations.

A diverse mix of housing types, including family homes, is integrated with community-focused buildings such as the new Family Hub at Portswood Place, which will accommodate nursery provision, family services, retail space, and a GP surgery. Developed by HTA Design in collaboration with Wandsworth Council and the local community, the proposals were shaped through extensive engagement and ultimately received overwhelming support in London’s largest regeneration ballot, enabling the project to progress to detailed design and delivery.
