HTA secure four shortlists in the BD AYA awards

The Social Impact Award …

This is a new BD category this year so we’re absolutely delighted to be part of the finalists!

HTA Design work very closely with communities and make it a priority to deliver social value in all projects. Our current work in estate regeneration, alongside our history as community architects, means that people are at the heart of our projects. We enjoy working with communities and have always done so. We seek to engage with existing communities and the wider neighbourhood through innovative consultation techniques. We take a long-term view of developments and look to the social and economic opportunities as well as the physical transformations.

We offer work experience, bursaries through Stephen Lawrence Trust, and we are one of a few RIBA practices trailblazing apprenticeships. We have launched a programme called Beyond Boundaries to support disadvantaged young people gain access to training and employment and which encourages young people from diverse backgrounds living in regeneration areas to engage in the exploration of design and construction.

Public Realm Architect of the Year …

We understand the importance that public realm plays in creating place and value; making a vital contribution to the development of communities. Our philosophy is to be responsive to each place, recognise its unique qualities, and to anticipate new and innovative urban and landscape forms. We believe in creating environments that are contextual in character and appearance, respect the cultural heritage, are resilient, long lasting and biodiverse, and which inspire social interaction and encourage active life styles.

As a practice we believe that communities are the experts at understanding the local ‘sense of place’. Only the existing community can provide the historical perspective, insights to critical local issues and solutions that are meaningful to all residents. We seek to tap into this fount of knowledge early, in all our regeneration projects, to develop the sense of community ownership and stewardship that ultimately dictates the success of any masterplanning project.

Sustainability Architect of the Year…

HTA has signed the ‘Architects Declare’ pledge to shift behaviour in response to the climate emergency, include faster adopting low carbon materials, reducing construction waste and upgrading existing buildings to make them more carbon efficient. HTA’s Chair has just ended his tenure as the RIBA President and has been influencing policy in terms of sustainability, quality of design and diversity.

We believe that each project we embark on represents an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about the issue of environmental sustainability and adaptation to climate change amongst residents and community organisations in the areas that we operate.

Housing Architect of the Year…

HTA are housing people: focused on the design of better housing and more sustainable residential places, across all sectors and every stage of design and delivery.

This year in particular we would be worthy winners of this award having celebrated our 50th year as housing specialists with our most diverse ranges of projects that demonstrate exemplary design quality in every case. Our work with local authorities includes major regeneration projects to transform entire city regions, alongside the smallest of infill sites using innovative housing typologies.

Major HTA projects for the build to rent sector converged with our modular construction expertise, enabling major buildings at Greenford, Greenwich and Croydon to be brought forward more quickly, with our paired towers nearing completion at George Street will be the tallest modular buildings in the world. Research undertaken by HTA in conjunction with Herriot Watt university demonstrate that in some cases, the adoption of modular construction has enabled a 60% reduction in embodied carbon, as well as a 90% reduction in construction waste.

We’re extremely excited to be shortlisted! Fingers crossed for October 23rd when the winners will be announced.
