RIBA response to the Sir Oliver Letwin Review

HTA are pleased to have contributed to RIBA's response to the Independent Review of Build Out Rates by Sir Oliver Letwin MP.

The RIBA has produced a prospectus of exemplary places that demonstrate high quality design, HTA case studies include our award-winning Officers Field and Hanham Hall.

'Ten Characteristics of Places where People want to Live’ provides valuable evidence demonstrating the relationship between design quality and the rate of supply in the delivery of much needed affordable homes. A range of case studies illustrate what attractive and successful new housing looks and feels like. These built examples form the basis of ten characteristics of places where people want to live that can be easily replicated across the country.

The report endorses the Letwin Review approach to increasing quality and supply through better placemaking, with a greater diversity of tenures and types of homes alongside improved planning, delivery and stewardship. It sets out the necessary conditions which must be in place at a local level to achieve high quality design - the right leadership, the right funding and delivery models, the right collaborative and innovative processes, and the right skills and resources.

‘Ten Characteristics of Places where People want to Live’ is the precursor to the Future Place project, a partnership with the Local Government Association, Royal Town Planning Institute and Chartered Institute of Housing, which will highlight exemplary placemaking practice around the country.
