HTA have submitted a planning application in collaboration with Clarion Housing and residents of the estate to refurbish Buildings A to D at the Sutton Estate, located in the heart of Chelsea. Our aim is to secure the legacy of the estate, ensuring the history, stories and beauty of these historic buildings can be enjoyed for generations to come, fitting new to the old in a sympathetic way. The proposals also include extensive landscape transformation of the entire estate.

The Sutton Estate has been the subject of an extended planning process over a number of years. Clarion’s retention and enhancement approach is designed to connect relationships between stakeholders in a common, shared set of aspirations.

Built in 1912 as blocks of self-contained flats the buildings are currently vacant and present a unique opportunity for sustainable transformation creating 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom homes. We have devised a menu of refurbishment proposals which have been developed in close collaboration with the existing community.

HTA hosted four monthly design workshops with the Residents’ Steering Group conducted via Zoom to seek feedback on the emerging landscape and refurbishment designs. Regular Design Updates were prepared and HTA led a tour of the estate with external stakeholders.

The community engagement process culminated in an outdoor cinema exhibition on the estate once lockdown measures were lifted. HTA’s architecture, heritage, landscape, sustainability and communication design disciplines have collaborated together on this radical refurbishment project. Planning consent is due in early 2021, and tender information is being prepared for an anticipated start on site in Spring 2021.
