Colin Ainger

BA (Hons)

Colin became a Partner in 2013 when HTA Architects Ltd became HTA Design LLP, having originally joined the practice in 2001 as a Project Manager.

He is now one of four Project Directors at HTA, leading a team of around 25 architects and assistants to deliver a portfolio of mixed-tenure and mixed-use projects for a range of public and private sector clients.

He has developed, over the years, an expertise in delivering large-scale regeneration projects, brown-field redevelopment schemes and build-to-rent, through work for organisations like Countryside Properties, Greystar, Hyde Housing Association, Wates Living Space, Telford Homes, Family Mosiac and Lendlease, to name a few.

His recent portfolio has included the following projects:

Former Queen Elizabeth Hospital Site, Tower Hamlets for Rydon and Family Mosaic

Colin originally led his team to help Rydon and Family Mosiac win the opportunity through a competitive tender process set up by the GLA (the landowner of the site). He and his team then worked up design proposals for 188 homes in total (both refurbishment and new build) through to a Detailed Planning submission, in consultation with the Local Authority Planning department and the GLA, winning consent in 2013.

Throughout the process, the team also worked on an innovative programme of public consultation events to engage with the vociferous and active local community – building consensus in order to achieve a positive planning decision at committee. Following Planning consent Colin and his team moved on to deliver the construction drawings for contractor Rydon, overseeing work on site. The scheme is now largely complete and has proved a popular redevelopment of the disused but once much-loved local hospital site.

South Acton Regeneration, Ealing for Countryside and L&Q

Colin’s team originally developed the masterplan for Acton Gardens (the name given to the redevelopment of the South Acton estate in Ealing), achieving Outline Planning consent for c2,500 new homes plus commercial and community facilities in 2012.

Since then, his team have delivered Detailed Planning consent for two of the construction phases on the estate (Phases 1 and 5), totalling around 430 new homes, as well as working drawings for Phase 1.

Recent Experience in Southwark

Colin has been actively working on projects in Southwark for the last couple of years, both for the private sector and the Council itself. He has worked on concept development for estate regeneration projects on behalf of the Council, leading resident engagement programmes and early masterplanning projects, as well as on a Detailed Planning Application for one of the Council’s Housing Delivery sites.

He has also worked on proposals for the 500-unit, mixed-use redevelopment of the Burgess Business Park site in Camberwell, which was submitted for Detailed Planning permission in December last year. Meanwhile he and his team are finalising proposals for the latest phase of the Elephant Park redevelopment project on behalf of Lendlease, at MP4, with a scheme of 220 new homes.

Through this experience Colin has developed good working relationships with both Housing and Planning officers at the Borough.
