HTA Design’s retrofit of the Sutton Estate has transformedfour 1913 housing blocks into 81 accessible, energy-efficient homes, whilepreserving the estate’s historic character.
Instead of demolishing and rebuilding, the projectreconfigured outdated studios, retained load-bearing walls and repairedoriginal brickwork using salvaged materials. Internal wood fibre insulationreduces heat loss by 57%, while 27 ground-source heat pump boreholes providefossil-fuel-free heating and help cut carbon emissions by 70%.
The judges called it “a model example” of estateregeneration and “an exemplar for other UK schemes.”
