A people centred, evidence-based approach
HTA Sustainable Futures takes a holistic, people-centred approach to environmental consultancy. We believe sustainable buildings must also be healthy, comfortable and resilient for the people who live in them.
Our principles
1. Start early We test daylight, overheating, energy and carbon at concept stage, before key decisions are fixed. This is when changes are easiest and cheapest to make, which reduces planning risk and avoids costly redesign later.
2. Work as part of the design team We listen carefully to architects and clients and ask practical questions from the outset, so sustainability shapes the design rather than being added at the end.
3. Use evidence to make balanced decisions We use dynamic modelling and recognised industry methods to inform decisions. We balance environmental performance with cost, planning, design quality and residents' needs.
4. Fabric first We prioritise well-insulated, airtight building fabric and careful junction detailing. We then combine this with all electric, low carbon heating and on site renewables such as solar panels.
5. Think about whole life carbon We consider both the carbon used to run a building and the carbon embodied in its materials. Where existing buildings are involved, we test whether refurbishment or new build is the more sustainable option.
6. Learn from completed projects Through post occupancy evaluation, we return to completed schemes such as Hanham Hall, Kidbrooke Park Road North and Sutton Estate. We hear from residents and use their feedback to improve future projects.
HTA's Sustainable Development Framework
Our work is guided by HTA's Sustainable Development Framework. The framework helps clients and design teams see at a glance how environmental, social and economic goals are balanced on each scheme.
